Whitby's Fourth of July celebration should be perfect—a hundred parade entries, two towns coming together, and a fireworks finale over the lake. As Grand Marshal, librarian Ann Beckett has the best view of it all from her perch on a float. But her waves to the crowd falter when she spots someone who vanished from Whitby years ago after being linked to an unsolved murder.

Before Ann can act, the mysterious figure disappears into the holiday chaos. Hours later, as townspeople stake out their fireworks viewing spots with picnic baskets and lawn chairs, a body is discovered. Now Ann and newspaper editor Grayson Phillips must sort through a parade of suspects while keeping up the festive facade. But someone in the crowd has deadly plans to keep old secrets hidden, and they're willing to add a librarian to the casualty list.

With the whole town watching and nowhere to hide, can Ann catch a killer before the fireworks start?
